A grateful dad teamed up with 38 family members, friends and colleagues for a fundraising hike up Mam Tor to say thank you to the hospital team who cared for his much-loved daughter who sadly died aged 21.

John McSherry, Head of Operations at Mitie and Co-op in Newton-Le-Willows, wanted to show his support for Warrington Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit in memory of daughter Erin, who sadly died in November 2022. Erin suffered several cardiac arrests at home caused by fatal blood clots in her lungs and heart, before being admitted to ICU. Erin selflessly chose to donate her organs, an act that has since improved the lives of at least three individuals.
The Peak District charity walk on 14 April 2024 was completed in three hours and 40 minutes, with a total of £2,532 raised for Warrington and Halton Teaching Hospitals Charity.

John said: “The staff working in ICU went above and beyond, showing consideration and kindness during such a difficult time. They provided amazing access for us, Erin’s boyfriend, Joe, and her friends, allowing us to stay overnight in the waiting area.
“Their kindness and support made a real difference, and we wanted to give back to ensure future patients and their families receive the same care.”
The funds raised by the initiative will contribute towards the extension of Warrington’s ICU to develop a balcony garden for some of the most critically ill patients.

Ellis Clarke, ICU Matron, said: “We are deeply grateful to John for raising funds in memory of his daughter Erin. The funds will contribute to the creation of our balcony garden, allowing patients to experience the outdoors and beautiful plants.
“This garden fulfils a long-held dream of our staff to provide a space that enhances patient wellbeing, reducing disorientation from prolonged ICU stays. Thanks to John’s dedication and everyone’s generosity, future patients will be able to benefit from the serene environment.”
