M6 closed following serious collision involving multiple lorries

The M6 northbound was closed northbound following a serious collision near Knutsford with delays ongoing due to emergency carriageway repairs.

The incident was reported to police at around 4am today, Tuesday 4 June, and involves four HGVs and a tanker. Delays of 90 minutes with traffic tailing back 12 miles is being reported by the highways agency.

One person is believed to have sustained serious injuries, he has been taken to the Royal Stoke Hospital. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening at this time.

Superintendent Gareth Wrigley said: “I appreciate the disruption that this incident is likely to cause, and I want to reassure motorists that we are working hard to resolve the situation as quickly as possible.

“However, due to the scale of the collision, we are expecting the closure is expected to remain in place for several hours.

Local diversion are in place, but we are urging motorists to avoid the area and delay their journeys if possible.”

UPDATE 8.30AM – Two lanes of the M6 northbound carriageway have now reopened, however temporary closures may need to be put back in place while recovery work is undertaken. Officers are continuing to urge motorists to avoid the area and delay their journeys if possible.

UPDATE 12pm All of the vehicles have now been recovered from the scene and the incident has now been passed to Highways England. Following assessment, it has been found that three lanes of the carriageway will need to be resurfaced, therefore only one lane is open at the current time Highways are working to complete the work as quickly as possible, however the lane closures are expected to remain in place throughout rush hour and into the evening. Therefore, police are continuing to urge motorists to avoid the M6 area affected if possible.

UPDATE 17:45 Following an earlier collision on the #M6 north J18-J19 involving 5 lorries, lanes 1,2 and 3 of (4) remain closed for emergency resurfacing works. There are severe delays of up to 2 hours on the approach.
