“Make Votes Matter” group sets up stall in town

THE Warrington and North Cheshire branch of Make Votes Matter setup a street stall in the town to support their campaign for a change in the voting system.

They talked to members of the public about the current first-past-the-post system – and asked the question: “When did Britain last have a single party government with at least 50 per cent of the vote?”

rMake Votes Matter is a single-issue campaign group which campaigns nationally to replace the current voting system with a system of proportional representation, where a party’s share of the vote closely reflects the number of seats it receives in a legislature.

Local group organiser Andy Watson said: “Regardless of what party has been in power, we have been perpetually living under minority rule.
“The current Conservative Government got elected with 56 per cent of the seats despite only obtaining 44 of per cent the vote. The last time Labour formed a government, they got a similar proportion of seats to what the Conservatives have now, yet only got 35 per cent of the vote. This simply is not fair and the voting system needs to change.”

As for the question of when the UK last elected a single-party government with at least 50 per cent of the vote – it was as far back as 1931.
