PLANNING chiefs at Warrington have rejected proposals for a refuelling facility for “green” HGVs on farmland at Appleton.

Applicants CNG Fuels Ltd had argued that the facility at the junction of Grappenhall Lane and Barley Castle Lane, Appleton would assist local firms to phase out diesel HGVs and switch to sustainable Bio-CNG vehicles.
Diesel HGVs are due to be banned by 2040.
But Appleton Parish Council objected to the refuelling facility development on Green Belt land which, they claimed would represent an encroachment on the community of Appleton, pollution and increased traffic on local roads.

The plan. which was rejectyed by Warrington Borough Council planners, involved a 1.45 hectare site and would have involved four dispenser islands, a plant compound, landscaping and the creation of an access.
It would serve fleets of specially adapted HGVs.
There were also concerns expressed about harm to wildlife, including protected Great Crested Newts.
