LEADERS Tamworth showed why they are top of National League North with a 3-0 win over Warrington Town at Cantilever Park.
Ben Milnes’ first half free kick and second half goals from Jamie Jellis and Kyle Finn helped them to a sixth successive win and go five points clear.
It ends the Yellows’ winning run at home and a night to forget was capped by a late red card for Mitch Duggan, sent off following a fracas in the goalmouth.
Tamworth set the tone for their pressing game straight from the off, charging down Sean Williams’ first ball from the kick-off.
Striker Daniel Creaney should have opened the scoring on 13 minutes when he failed to get a clean contact on Jellis’ ball across goal, though he did earn the free kick that Milnes would curl home from 25 yards out on 17.
Milnes and the tireless Jellis were dominating the midfield, and it took two goal line blocks from Tom Hannigan to keep the score to one at half time.
The Yellows struggled to impose themselves in the attacking third, Isaac Buckley-Ricketts forcing a routine save off Jas Singh in the first half and then having a shot deflected wide after the break being the only real chances of note.
Just as it seemed the hosts could work their way back in to the match, Tamworth went right from back to front to make it 2-0 on 55 minutes.
Long throw specialist Tom Tonks started a move from his own corner flag, with Creaney and Daniel Acquaye linking up to find Finn’s run across from the right to score at the near post.
Tonks helped create the third goal too, his long throw headed goalwards by Creaney forcing a save at full stretch from Dan Atherton, with Jellis on hand to sweep home the rebound for a deserved goal.
The Yellows get an immediate chance to put things right at home when Alfreton Town visit on Saturday.
