UPDATED: THE M6 near Warrington was closed this afternoon Thursday while the air ambulance attended a serious road traffic collision involving two people suffering trauma injuries.

Both carriageways were closed for a time although both have now re-opened.
But traffic remained heavy in the area.
Police, paramedics and the air ambulance were called to the ‘serious collision’ on the M6 between Junctions 22 and 23 Haydock island.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service said: “We attended an incident between junctions 23 and 24 on the M6 following reports of a road traffic collision (RTC).
“Crews were alerted at 12.25 pm and two fire engines and the search and rescue team were on scene shortly after.
“Merseyside Police and North West Ambulance Service also attended.
“Crews arrived to find an RTC involving a car and two HGVs. The drivers of the HGVs were out on arrival, however the occupants of the car were trapped.
“Crews worked to remove the roof of the car and extracted the driver and passenger, both of which were conscious and breathing. Both casualties were transported to hospital for care.
“At 2.14pm crews handed the scene over to Merseyside Police and left.”
The driver and passenger were said to have suffered trauma injuries.

In another incident, traffic was stopped on the M56 in both directions between J11 Warrington and J12 Runcorn due to pedestrians on the road.
It has now re-opened.
