Hockey women unlucky to lose at league leaders

WARRINGTON women’s hockey 1st team were unlucky to lose in a close-fought game at league leaders Knutford.

As expected, the hosts started the game strong and took the lead midway through the first half, a
goal which kickstarted Warrington’s own performance and ultimately an equaliser.
A slick passing move ended with Jo Nordovic forcing a good save from the Knutsford goalkeeper with the rebound falling to Kara Doyle who was happy to snatch her first goal for the 1st team
Both teams pushed for a winner in the second half. From a defensive perspective, Steph Quayle
cleared an effort off the line and goalkeeper Tracy Jackson managed to save a goal-bound effort with
her head while wingers Jenny Fox and Amy Molden continued to cause problems for Knutsford.
Sadly, for Warrington, the league leaders managed to sneak a scrappy winning goal late on.
Warrington Women’s Development team also suffered a narrow defeat, losing 1-0 away at Alderley
Edge.
A late start, tired legs, and miserable weather combined with a well-organised and skilful opposition
was too much for Warrington who had won both of their previous games this season. Olivia Mason
and Jessica Jones excelled in defence while Bella Thornton and Katherine Parker enjoyed a combative
game in midfield. Nicole Williams managed to make inroads in attack but Warrington were
unfortunate not able to match Alderley’s second half winner.
Warrington Men’s 1st Team extended their winning start to the season with a hard-fought 2-1 home
victory against Crewe.
The visitors controlled the game from the off, forcing mistakes from a Warrington team that was
struggling to find a foothold in the game. Crewe controversially but deservedly took the lead, their
striker cooly finding the net after a perceived foul was waved away before Warrington equalised just
before halftime through a James Molden drag-flick.
In a tight second half, Warrington managed to nudge ahead. Harvey Mason rolled the ball back to
Alan Livingstone who lifted the ball over the Crewe goalkeeper and into the net. Crewe rallied but
were unable to breach a Warrington defence that included Tim Berger in imperious form and Richard
Cook who managed to clear one off the line in the dying seconds.
Warrington Men’s 2nd team lost 4-3 away against Northern in a topsy-turvy affair.
Warrington lost midfielder Noal Phillpotts to a facial injury in the early stages and found themselves
4-0 down at halftime as Northern were clinical in attack and fortunate in defence.
Hope came early in the second half as Iain Richards found the bottom corner before Rob Powell
grabbed Warrington’s second with an expert reverse-stick finish after David Hales found him
unmarked. Shortly after Doug Samuels hit the byline and set up striker Mark Taylor who applied a
simple finish to make it 4-3. Warrington pushed for an equalizer but the Northern keeper rose to the
occasion and made numerous quality saves
