Alterations approved at Grade 2 Listed church

PLANNING chiefs have given the go-ahead for alterations at Grade 2 Listed St Mary’s Church, Great Sankey, Warrington.

They involve the demolition of a flat-roofed link corridor between the church – which dates from around 1767 – and an annexe used as a family room which will be improved with new toilets, a kitchen and new front and rear entrances to the corridor.

A new entrance from the corridor to the family room will have a sliding screen within it, so that two small, separate meeting rooms can be formed.

Warrington Borough Council planners were told the new facility will be used to provide more space for children’s groups and other church meetings. It will incorporate environmental efficiency measures, including roof insulation, making use of rainwater from the roof and reduced flush toilets. Building materials to be used will be energy efficient where possible.
The church has consulted with members of the congregation and immediate neighbours.
