WARRINGTON Borough Council has granted itself planning permission to carry out refurbishment works to a Grade 2 Listed building, originally a lodge to historic Walton Hall.

The Grade 2 Listed building – dating from around 1838 – is in Chester Road, High Walton and stands at the entrance to Walton Lea Crematorium.

It was originally a dwelling, but more recently has been used for general storage associated with the crematorium.
Refurbishment of the building will include a full rewire, decoration, new carpets and isolated plaster repairs.
The council has told planning officers that the works are connected with the proposed conversion of the building to public rooms associated with a new “pet cemetery”
But a separate, future planning application will have to be submitted for the change of use of the building.

Members of the council’s development management committee were told the works constituted essential repair and maintenance. They should assure the long-term preservation and viability of an historic asset.
The council’s conservation officer has reviewed the proposed works and supports the proposal.
It is not considered the work would have any adverse impact on the historic fabric of the building and should ensure I ts conservation and continued viable use for the future.
