Listed barn in the Green Belt to be modernised

PLANS to modernise a Grade 2 Listed barn in the Green Belt have been given the go-ahead by Warrington planning chiefs.

The scheme is at Firs Cottage, Firs Lane, Appleton – one half of a pair of semi-detached dwellings formed from a previous barn converted in 1991 and one other barn.

These form Dairy Cottage, Daintith Barn and Firs Cottage, all within the curtilage of Daintith Farm and Listed as Grade 2.
Firs Cottage was altered in 2010 with replacement conservatory glazing and roof and the installation of two roof lights.
The new proposal is for an enclosed brick porch with a slate roof to form a new main entrance to the property visible from the driveway and parking area.
Currently, the main entrance is to the rear of the property, through the conservatory and hidden from visitors.

Internally the kitchen will be relocated and a non-original wall between the sitting room and bedroom will be removed to form an open-plan kitchen, dining and family room.
As the existing roof is no longer weatherproof it will be replaced with new slates to match the originals and five rooflights.
Planners were told the applicants sought to preserve the unique character of the building while providing family accommodation for 21st-century life.
They believe the proposals will not have an adverse impact on the original properties.
