Council confirms commitment to traveller transit site

WITH ongoing traveller issues in the town and three unauthorised encampments, Warrington Borough Council has confirmed its commitment to providing a suitable transit site.

It follows ongoing criticism from opposition Cllrs and local residents following significant issues involving an unauthorised encampment of 20 vehicles on Silver Lane Risley and Orford Hub Jubilee Park last week.

A Warrington Borough Council spokesperson said: “An unauthorised encampment arrived at Junction 9 Retail Park on Wednesday 2 August. As the land is privately owned, the landowner instructed Bailiffs to attend to serve notice on the group and they left on Friday 4 August.
“We are continuing to work with our partners to identify a suitable traveller transit site in the borough. We remain committed to its delivery as we recognise the benefits for both the travelling community and our residents.
“The need for this is fully established in the submitted Proposed Submission Version Local Plan.”

The three unauthorised encampments in the town have been confirmed as Sainsbury’s car park (private land) – 8 caravans, Victoria Park (council land) – 5 caravans and Gateway Trade Park (private land) – 2 caravans.
Another encampment of six vehicles has been allowed to stay on the overflow car park at Orford Hub since March, due to ongoing welfare concerns.

Borough Cllr. Wendy Maisey has been critical of the Borough Council saying it “is failing its residents” with the constant ongoing delays in meeting to finalise the transit site.

  1. So these annoying criminals are going to have our hard earned money thrown at them for a ‘holiday site’ after they caused carnage to Orford hub field stopping the kids from playing football and then started robbing from all the shops on the retail park without consequences.
