Council to spend £2.3m on low carbon heating in iconic buildings

WARRINGTON is to spend more than £2.3 million on installing low carbon heating in two of the town’s most iconic buildings – which are currently also two of the borough council’s biggest carbon emitters.

Members of the council’s cabinet will be asked to approve the spending on the Grade 1 Listed Town Hall and the Grade 2 Listed Walton Hall at their meeting on Monday (July 10)
The work will involve replacing five end-of-life legacy gas boilers serving the Town Hall and West Annexe and Walton Hall with ground source heat pump technology.
A smart battery system will also be included in the Town Hall project.
Anticipated cost of the Town Hall and West Annexe project is £1,162,331 while the Walton Hall scheme is expected to cost £1,169,744.
A report to be presented to the cabinet on Monday states the buildings are in the top ten carbon emitters in the council’s operational estate.
Completion of the work will be a significant step towards meeting the council’s ambition of being a net zero organisation by 2030.
Work is expected to start in October and be completed by next March.

Because of the Listed status of the buildings, the council’s conservation officer has been consulted and an application for Listed Building Consent has been submitted.
