Warrington Walking Day: Walkers greeted by grey skies and drizzle!

2

UPDATED: VIDEO & Pictures: GREY skies and drizzle greeted thousands of walkers as they took to the streets for the annual Warrington Walking Day.

Walkers from local churches braved the drizzle as they left their churches and headed to the town hall lawn for the annual Walk of Witness.

The service was led by the Archdeacon of Warrington Simon Fisher, with the drizzle thankfully stopping as the walkers set off.

Mayor of Warrington Cllr Jean Flaherty took the salute – and become one of the few Mayors to perform the duty twice after an extended period in office of 13 months.

Incoming mayor Cllr Steve Wright, took part in the walk and will takeover the chains of office from tomorrow.

This year’s event is believed to be the 187th time the walk has taken place. Last year’s walk was the first after an absence of three events due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Warrington Walking Day was originally founded by a former Rector of Warrington as a counter-attraction to Newton Races which, he believed, were attracting many townsfolk to gambling and drink.
Newton Races died out years ago – but the great Walk of Christian Witness, Warrington Walking Day, continues.
