THE twitter alert service set up to warn motorists when the swing bridges across the Manchester Ship Canal in Warrington are about to close is back up and running after a technical glitch.

The warning service came to a halt on May 20 but is now back up and running after Warrington Worldwide highlighted the issue after being contacted by readers.

The alert system was launched in the summer of 2014 and has over 3,300 followers.

It gives motorists in Warrington advance warning of when swing bridges will be closed to road traffic.

The system gives warnings of 25-30 minutes before the bridges are due to swing and the service is free and can be accessed from a smartphone or via the borough council’s website.
The service is provided by Warrington Borough Council and Peel Ports – operators of the Manchester Ship Canal.

A council spokesperson said: “Automated swing bridge alerts via Twitter are now being issued again following a minor technical issue”.
