Police issue more warnings over cold callers and rogue traders

POLICE at Appleton have issued more warnings about cold callers and rogue traders operating in the Warrington South area.

On Tuesday eveing police had reports of males cold calling at addresses in several areas of Warrington including Appleton.

The cold callers in these cases are what police refer to as ‘Nottingham knockers’, they call at addresses selling overpriced household items from a large bag or rucksack. The callers (almost always male) say they are working as part of a prison or probation rehabilitation scheme, they will also carry a card like the one pictured to make themselves look more genuine.
No such schemes exist.
Police advise that if you are paid a visit by any of these cold callers, please remember to say ‘no’, the more people who refuse to buy from these cold callers the less profitable it becomes to work in the area and a higher chance they will not return as often or not at all.
If anyone calls at your address, please call the police on 101.

Meanwhile, rogue traders are reported to be calling at addresses all over the South trying to sell household items or offering their services to work on your house.
Police are urging residents to remain vigilant and look out for neighbours, if anyone does cold call offering to sell items or offer out work don’t feel pressured into have any work carried out or buy their stuff, even if it something you may be considering having done or wanted.
Don’t agree to sign a contract or hand over money at the door. Think about it and talk to someone you trust.
Don’t be embarrassed to say ‘No’ to people or ask them to leave.
In addition, if you pay or agree to pay over £42 for any services or goods that are sold to you in your home, then you have fourteen days to cancel the agreement.
If you cancel, any monies that you have paid should then be returned to you.
The trader must give you a written notice of your cancellation rights when you agree the contract.
If you are visited by a cold caller and you feel they may not be genuine please call 101.
