£3m school expansion scheme leads to old classrooms looking “worn and damaged”

A £3 million expansion scheme has led to major discrepancies between “old” and “new” parts of a Warrington Primary School.

The expansion scheme which will enable Grappenhall Heys Primary School to take 210 additional pupils is nearing completion.
But council chiefs say the work has resulted in a sharp contrast between the new sections of the school and the shared and old sections which are worn, dated and damaged.

They want to use £550,000 ,left over from the expansion project to enable improvements where required in the older parts of the building – such as re‐decoration of classrooms, the main hall and corridors, replacing furniture and floor finishes, renovating toilets, updating lighting and modifying external access in order to reduce future footfall through the whole building.

Members of the borough council’s cabinet are being asked to approve the investment as soon as possible so it can be completed before the expanded school is occupied.
A report to the cabinet to be considered on Tuesday says: “It is reasonable and befitting to want to bring the shared areas of the school and the damaged areas within the old classrooms to a level of facilities and decoration to match that of the newly expanded parts
