Lorry trailer fire causes lengthy delays on M6

A lorry trailer blaze on the M6 northbound at Warrington caused lengthy delays of up to eight miles on Thursday evening.

Three fire engines from Warrington, Birchwood and Lymm attended the incident between junctions 21 (Woolston) and 21A (Croft) at 6.09pm on Thursday, May 11, following reports of a vehicle fire.

The lorry trailer on fire was extinguished by firefighters using a hose reel. The cab was disconnected by the driver so only the trailer was involved in the fire. A full closure of the northbound carriageway took place while the incident was dealt with.

Traffic was held on the M6 northbound within J22 near Winwick due to the lorry fire. There were delays of 45 minutes above normal on the approach; 8 miles of congestion, back past the M56.

Fire crews remained at the scene until gone 9pm as they awaited a recovery truck for the trailer and monitored its temperatue as a precaution.
