Veterinary centre offers new keyhole surgery for neutering female dogs

A WARRINGTON veterinary centre is now able to offer innovative new keyhole surgery for neutering female dogs so their recovery time and risks are significantly cut.

Rees Veterinary Centre in Orford Avenue is one of only a handful of vets to offer this new type of surgery to dog owners in the North West.

Conventional neutering in female dogs is a major “open surgery” operation. The recovery time for animals is normally 10-14 days. During this time owners need to carefully look after their animals wound, minimise their exercise and manage their pain levels. There may sometimes be complications such as bleeding, swelling or even opening up of the wound.
The new keyhole neutering surgery is dramatically less invasive. It is conducted using keyhole incisions only 5-10 millimetres across. Because of the small incisions and minimal stitches used, most dog patients are up and able to walk in just three to four days. The animal’s post-operative pain is also significantly reduced as are other risks.
More than £22,000 has been invested in Rees Vets’ new keyhole surgery facility and equipment. The innovative new surgery will be performed by senior vet Simon Gillingham who has practiced as a vet for a decade and who is an advanced certificate holder in soft tissue and orthopaedic surgery.

He said: “Veterinary surgery has advanced dramatically in recent years. So we wanted to be one of the first practices in the region to offer this new procedure. Our keyhole surgery is much kinder to the animal and our patients have a much faster and less complicated recovery”
The new keyhole surgery is now available and bookings are being taken. Dog owners who are interested in finding out more about the procedure or who wish to book an appointment for surgery should call 01925 232221 or email [email protected]
