EAGLE Sports FC progressed to the semi-finals of the Liverpool County FA Challenge Cup with a convincing 4-1 victory over Joey Orrs FC at the Anfield Sports Centre.
The home side came out of the blocks quick in the first 10 minutes, however, the Gulls weathered the early pressure and began to settle into the game. Eagle were then awarded a penalty, however, captain Adam Coleman was unable to convert, dragging his spot kick wide of the target.
This didn’t deter the visitors and the Warrington side took the lead on 20 minutes when Luke Sutton volleyed home a Lewis McEvatt cross at the back post, with the lead then doubled shortly after, following a great team move, ending in McEvatt finishing well from the edge of the box.
The home side responded and did get themselves back in the game, with a pass cutting through the Eagle defence and the striker finishing well past Liam Marlow.
Before the break, the Gulls restored their two goal lead as Lewis McEvatt grabbed his second goal of the game with another edge of the box low finish, much to the delight of the large travelling support.
The seond half saw the visitors manage the game well and grab a goal to seal the tie in the last 10 minutes as a counter attack ended in Jack Mercer putting the ball into the bottom left hand corner.
Joint Manager Danny Nixon said of the win “I think that is one of our best performances of the season.
“Off the pitch, we had worked hard to get some information on our opponents, have a look at how they play and came up with a plan to combat that and allow us to dictate the game.
“We’ve worked on that in training the last two weeks so to see it come together y was so pleasing for me, Chinny (joint .manager Richard Chinn) and Shaun (first team coach Shaun Staniford). It was a top drawer performance and execution of what we asked the lads to do.
“I’m delighted for Merce (Jack Mercer) to come on and seal it with a great finish. He’ll have been disappointed not to have been starting but his attitude was outstanding and when he came on, he did what was asked.
“Overall, it was a really good victory and we can now look ahead to a semi final in a few weeks. We’ve got another quarter final next weekend now in the League Cup so the big games are coming thick and fast and that’s what we want.”
The Gulls are in cup action again this coming Saturday when they make the trip to Whalley Range FC in the quarter finals of the Cheshire FL JB Parker Cup, kick off 2pm.
