Major works finish enabling demolition of ageing gas site

MAJOR works to re-route a key gas pipeline in Warrington – which helps keep 19,000 homes warm – has been completed, enabling the demolition of a gas site.

Cadent, which manages the North West’s gas distribution network, invested a six-figure sum on this essential ‘diversion’ works in Bradshaw Lane, Thelwall.

It was substantial engineering, starting with creating a short-term bypass for gas to continue to flow while the new pipeline was installed and commissioned.
This meant gas stayed on throughout – the 19,000 homes, 35 industrial connections and 336 commercial premises supplied by this pipe had interrupted supply.

The engineers from Cadent, as well as specialists from PMC and R and R Utility Solutions, worked on this for several months, often in deep excavations.
After commissioning the new pipeline, the ageing above-ground installation that sat behind metal fences in Bradshaw Lane has now been demolished.

Kevin Flynn, Senior Delivery Support Manager, Cadent, said: “This was complex engineering and out of the ordinary in relation to the work we usually undertake here at Cadent – we maybe do one or two jobs like this in the North West region every year.
“We had to do this work because the above-ground installation in Bradshaw Lane was showing signs of its age.
“Our priority was doing the work safely, and with as little disruption as possible to people in the local community.
“We are very grateful for the kindness and interest shown in the work from neighbours to the site.”

Cadent manages a network of 21,000 miles of gas distribution pipes in North West England, which carry gas to 2.7 million homes, hospitals, schools, industrial and other sites. It also provides the region’s 24/7, year-round gas emergency service.
