Former church set to be converted into homes for young people

A FORMER church dating back more than 120 years will be converted into homes for young people leaving care, if Warrington planners give approval.

The former church building is the former Gospel Hall – latterly known as the Oasis Church, in Forster Street, Orford.

It has stood empty since the Oasis Church moved to the former St Mark’s Church on Longshaw Street, Warrington in September 2019.
The building is in a residential area, 3-4 minutes walk from bus stops in Clegge Street and Winwick Road and 15 minutes walk from Warrington Central railway station.

Reports being studied by planners indicate the plan is to provide eight apartments with 24/7 supported living for care leavers.
The project will be carried out in partnership with the local authority and is intended to be part of a “pathway to independence” for young people leaving care.
Two properties have been identified for providing specific parent and baby support.
“The design team and developer alike are committed to a high-quality scheme that will not only benefit the new residents but the wider community and integrate within the surrounding residential streetscape,” the report states.
Warrington Borough Council planning officers are currently considering the proposals.
