Emergency gas repairs completed as traffic chaos eased at Winwick

UPDATED: EMERGENCY gas repairs that brought traffic chaos to the roads around Winwick for two consecutive days – have been completed ahead of schedule.

Gridlock had been reported in Winwick for two days at the start of the week due to gas pipe repairs being carried out by Cadent opposite Winwick Park.

Local resident Andy Griffiths said at the time: “The A49 has been reduced to one lane just past the Swan in Winwick, forcing all traffic, including that turning left onto the Winwick Link Road to merge into one lane before the roundabout. This is causing traffic to back up past the bend in Hermitage Green, all the way towards Newton on the A49 as well as up to Mill Lane on Myddleton Lane. The lights on the A49/Winwick Link Road roundabout have not had their priorities changed for these works.
“They were already badly set but now only let a few cars through heading south on the A49 before changing, leaving gaps where no traffic is flowing at all as there are limited cars wanting to turn on the link road from the A49 North.

Andy added: “We today have cars driving the wrong way down Hornby Lane (which is a one way street) and on the wrong side of Myddleton Lane in order to get to Waterworks Lane towards the M6. It is only an amount of time before there is an accident or injury, with these roadworks potentially going on to 1st February.
“Warrington Borough Council has been informed about this via their reporting tool, but residents who have reported have not yet heard any response.
“Residents in Winwick are already concerned about the increase in traffic due to the developments in the Local Plan, and this further highlights the issue that our roads are not able to take any increase in traffic without significant congestion and impact on air quality. There are also works scheduled that will put lights on to Waterworks Lane in order to do some works to the electricity sub-station which will no-doubt cause further disruption.”

According to Cadent’s website, the emergency road works would be in place until February 1st.
A Warrington Borough Council spokesperson said: “Cadent Gas have been carrying out essential emergency repair works to their gas main on a section of Newton Road just after Winwick Link Road. The repair works were completed on Tuesday evening”.
