Mixed views on proposed traffic calming measures at Lymm

RESIDENTS at Lymm have mixed views about the proposed traffic calming measures, including speed humps in the village.

Warrington Borough Council says there are safety concerns about the operation of the existing mini-roundabout and a need to improve visibility and reduce potential conflicts.

The 20mph has poor conformity and Eagle Brow is a busy route into the village with high pedestrian activity on the existing narrow footway. Approach speeds on Brookfield Road in both directions to the mini roundabout are also a concern.

Local Cllr. Ian Marks said: “We have been campaigning for calming traffic measures here for a long time and I am pleased that something is to be done at last. However, this is a classic case of not pleasing all the people all the time and residents have differing views about the proposals. Road humps always generate controversy. It is a shame that more consultation hasn’t taken place with local councillors and residents before the scheme was put forward.

“A major problem is that no one knows who has the right of way on the mini roundabout. Many motorists assume that Eagle Brow as the main road has the right of way and this can cause confusion. I agree that speed is also a problem so physical measures are needed to slow vehicles down. We hope that the proposals for a combination of speed cushions, round top road humps and a full width flat top road hump will improve safety.”
