Five fire crews tackle car transporter blaze as M6 closed near Lymm

THE M6 near Lymm was closed as five fire crews tackled a serious blaze involving a car transporter vehicle earlier today, Thursday.

The incident, which was reported at around 2:15 pm happened between junctions 19 and 20 northbound, and involved the trailer section of a transporter vehicle. All the vehicles on the trailer were described as being ‘well alight’.

Fire engines from Winsford, Alsager, Lymm, Irlam (GMFRS), Altrincham (GMFRS) attended at the scene.

Seven vehicles on the trailer were involved in the blaze. The tractor unit was detached from the trailer.
Firefighters in breathing apparatus tackled the fire with hose reel jets. All vehicles on the trailer were well alight. There were no casualties involved in this incident.

UPDATE 15:40
The two GMFRS fire engines left the incident, the three Cheshire ones remained. Crews continued to damp down the trailer and the vehicles on it. Temperature readings were taken using a thermal imaging camera as police and Highways managed the traffic flow.
Shortly after 4pm two lanes were opened but traffic remained heavy in and around the Lymm area with delays of up to 90 minutes on the M6.
