TRAFFIC chaos was being reported again in and around the Stockton Heath area this morning when the London Road swing bridge became stuck again.
It is the latest in a number of incidents when the aging bridge, which is due to undergo maintenance in the new year, has stuck leading to heavy traffic congestion.
Many living in the area are fearing the implications when the bridge closes to traffic permanently next April, for long overdue maintenance work.
As well as causing traffic chaos, the latest incident caused significant delays on local bus services.
The works due to start in April, will involve Peel Ports investing around £6 million in undertaking a complete structural, mechanical, electrical refurbishment and repainting programme to improve the longevity of this key asset – which is set to be closed for up to nine months!
The bridge has now re-opened.
There are significant delays on the 5, 5A, 6, 7, 8, 8A, 9B, 9, 9A, 62, 62A due to the swingbridge being stuck in the open position. Buses are delayed and will divert via Gainsborough Road, Chester Road and Walton New Road.
We apologise for any inconvenience caused.
