A YOUNGSTER from St Monica’s Primary School in Appleton, Warrington has been awarded the top prize in a nationwide competition hosted by Aldi, as part of its long-standing partnership with Team GB and ParalympicsGB.

Maya, aged nine, was voted the overall winner of the supermarket’s nationwide Comic Strip Challenge, which asked young people across the country to design a comic strip showing their visions of what an Olympic or Paralympic Games may look like in the future.
She impressed the judges with her imaginative design, which showed a futuristic depiction of an athlete space surfing across planets in the year 3024.
The supermarket has rewarded St Monica’s Primary School with Aldi vouchers, exclusive Team GB and ParalympicsGB signed merchandise, and a goody bag. Their school also received £1,000 cash.
To celebrate the achievement, St Monica’s Primary School received a visit from Team GB athlete Daniel Purvis and ParalympicGB athlete Laurie Williams, who awarded the prizes and gave a short assembly to the St Monica’s pupils on the importance of a healthy and balanced diet.

Adam Zavalis, Marketing Director at Aldi UK, said: “This challenge is the latest in a series of activities we’ve created in partnership with Team GB and ParalympicsGB.
“Maya’s design really stood out to our judges and being selected from hundreds of entries is certainly an achievement to be proud of.”
The Comic Strip Challenge was launched as part of Aldi’s Get Set To Eat Fresh initiative which is designed to inspire students aged five to 14-years-old to cook and eat healthy, fresh food.
By 2024, the programme aims to reach three million young people, helping to build their understanding and love of nutritious food via free online resources and a range of initiatives.
