MINISTER of State for Immigration Robert Jenrick has agreed to meet with Warrington South MP Andy Carter to discuss concerns over asylum seekers being allowed to stay at the Fir Grove Hotel at short notice.

Mr Carter was among a large number of MPs quizzing Mr Jenrick today, Monday, on the fallout of the problems at the Manston Migrant Centre in Kent.

Mr Carter said: “At the earliest opportunity I’ve raised this matter on the floor of the House of Commons because I know the decision to use Fir Grove is causing anxiety and worry amongst local people.
“It is not acceptable that Home Office officials should simply steamroll ahead when there are valid objections from the local community and when the Borough Council are yet to receive an understanding of the needs of those who may be housed there.
“I’m grateful to Mr Jenrick who has agreed to meet with me to review the decision.”

In response to Mr Cater’s call for a meeting, Mr Jenrick said: “I’d be more than happy to meet with my Right Hon. friend, so we can discuss this and he can represent the views of his constituents.
I can also inform the House that I have agreed with my officials at the Home Office that as a matter of course, members of parliament should be informed of new facilities being opened in their constituencies ahead of time and all local authorities should be informed and a proper engagement undertaken with them so we can understand the specific issues and provide the support that might be needed.
“It isn’t right that MPs and councils find out on social media or third hand and I intend to bring that to an end.”
