A special environment family fun day is taking place at Whittle Hall, Warrington, tomorrow, Saturday, October 8.
Warrington Borough Council has teamed up with The Land Trust and Great Sankey Parish Council for a fun-filled Whittle Hall Environment Day at Whittle Hall Community Centre from 10am-2pm.
The day will feature some fantastic activities for the whole family to enjoy. The pond dipping sessions will give people the opportunity to discover the unseen world of interesting creatures that live in the pond. Visitors can also embark on a special nature trail, with a prize and certificate upon completion.
If you’d like to take part in these two activities, you’ll need to book your place before you arrive. To do this, visit eventbrite.co.uk and search for ‘Whittle Hall’. The pond dipping is open to all ages, but children must be accompanied and supervised by an adult.
Local councillors and members of the parish council will be available at the event to talk to residents about local issues. Council staff will also be present to raise awareness about waste and recycling, cycle routes within the area, road safety, the ranger service and council events.
The event will also be attended by a PCSO from Cheshire Police, who will be providing free bike marking, which protects bicycles from theft by marking them with a tamper-resistant label with a unique QR code that can be scanned instantly.
A key focus of the event will be encouraging the community to work together to tackle the increasing geese population in the area. The geese are no longer migrating, as the climate is milder and they are very well fed – despite signs asking people not to feed them.
The overpopulation of geese in the area is causing a range of issues, including:
• Fouling on footpaths and grassed areas
• Road issues, with geese obstructing traffic
• Poor condition of the duck pond, including island erosion and lack of biodiversity
• Angel wing in resident geese, due to being fed bread
• Increased reports of rodents, caused by the abundance of food scraps and seeds
