WARRINGTON Wolves half-back George Williams is to captain England in their World Cup warm-up match against Fiji.

Williams, 27, is the only Warrington player in Shaun Wane’s squad, and he will lead the side in the absence of regular skipper Sam Tomkins for the match at the AJ Bell Stadium on Friday night.

He said: “Waney (Shaun Wane, coach) grabbed me and told me and it was an unreal feeling.

“It will be the pinnacle of my career to captain my country.

“It is massive for me and my family and everyone who has helped me along the way, so it is something I will cherish and I’m really looking forward to leading this great group out.

“My family always come watching but it makes it even more special now that I’m captain. It’s mind blowing really.

“It’s beyond dreams. You dream to be a professional rugby player as a kid and England is obviously the main one but to captain England was never on my radar. I’m blown away but really pleased and I can’t wait.”

England kick-off the World Cup against Samoa at St James’ Park in Newcastle in October 15.

The other teams in their group are France and Greece.
