MP condems PM for “pulling wool over eyes” over £2,500 energy price cap

WARRINGTON North MP Charlotte Nichols has condemned the Prime Minister for “pulling the wool over eyes” regarding the £2,500 energy price cap.

It follows Full Fact, a reputable information fact checker, blasting Liz Truss after she wrongly and repeatedly claimed energy bills were capped at £2500 during a round of radio interviews on September 29.

In response to Truss’ claims, Full Fact said: “This is false. This figure is based on the amount a “typical” household will pay, based on average energy usage, but it is not a cap on the total cost of bills.”

It was her first public appearance since the Bank of England propped up the markets and described her mini-budget as a “material risk to UK financial stability”.
However, this isn’t the first time Truss has made similar claims, also doing so on September 25 during an interview with CNN. After that interview and in response to the incorrect claims, Full Fact wrote to the Prime Minister asking her to acknowledge the error and ensure she described the policy accurately in the future.

Ms. Nichols said: “There is no £2500 energy price cap and it’s wrong for her to claim there is.

“Liz Truss’ reluctance to accurately describe her own policy shows just how willing she is to try and pull the wool over all our eyes.
“Full Fact asked her to be careful with her words and she didn’t, she continued to peddle something she knows isn’t true.
“There are families in Warrington, who thought that this winter may have been a little easier for them, because of what she said during those interviews and now will be worrying how they get by.
“My constituents need real support not the continued false promises from the government”

Meanwhile, Martin Lewis, Money Saving Expert said: “It risks some people, possibly vulnerable elderly people, thinking they can keep the heat on max all winter.”

According to Ofgem the energy regulator, from 1st October people in Warrington on average will face bills of 34p per kWh for electricity and 10p per kWh for gas and then there are the additional, expensive standing charges that residents will have to pay regardless of whether they use any energy or not.

  1. If she’s not got anything positive to say, then say nothing. It isn’t a good look to continually bash the opposition. How about her showing an interest in the failed traffic calming in Latchford.and making sure that the Orford Hallfields one doesn’t go ahead.
