Demolition plan approved next to historic town centre pub

PLANNING chiefs have given the go-ahead for the demolition of a former sweet shop adjoining the historic Lower Angel pub in Buttermarket Street, Warrington.

The scheme involves the demolition of the former Simply Sweets shop to make way for a replacement retail unit with residential accommodation above and to the rear, consisting of four studio flats and four two-bedroom flats.

Refuse storage and cycle storage facilities are also included in the scheme.

The Cheshire Archaeology Planning Advisory Service says the development is in an area of Warrington where archaeological remains might be expected to survive.
They recommend that no development should take place until a programme of archaeological work has been implemented.

There is a substantial chance that the development will directly impact the remains of several buildings identified on the 1851 Warrington Town Plan, they say.

The scheme does not involve the Lower Angel, a traditional town centre pub, which underwent a refurbishment only a few years ago and re-opened under new management last August.
The pub features in “Ghosts, mysteries and legends of old Warrington” written by the late Wally Barnes, who believed the premises to be haunted by “Dandy Dick Peabody,” a local ladies man who had a string of dalliances at the premises.
