A YOUNG Scout from Warrington has been honoured by Chief Scout Bear Grylls in the Chief Scout’s Unsung Hero Awards

Ben Wilson was one of 21 young people from around the UK recognised for saving lives, fundraising and showing strength in adversity.
They were awarded Bear’s new “Never Give Up” badge and neckerchief at a special event honouring inspiring young people from across the UK at the Bear Grylls Adventure Centre at the NEC, in Birmingham.
The Unsung Heroes were recognised for their achievements saving lives, fundraising for others or showing strength in adversity.
Ben from Warrington was inspired by his Nanna’s battle against cancer.
He raised around £2000 for the Widnes and Runcorn Cancer Support Group – because, as he said, “there are always nice people with biscuits and drinks for when you call in”.

Ben raised money by hosting raffles, donating his toys to sell and getting sponsorship for giving up chocolate for Lent. He rose to the challenge of completing “25 Things In May” as part of the centre’s Silver Jubilee celebrations.
His 25 activities were focused on fun outdoors and living his best life. Regular activities include planting flower gifts, making chocolate boxes, sending pictures and having dinner with those in the support group.
As well as meeting Bear Grylls, Ben and the other Scouts got to take with them their parents, carers and other family members and try a range of activities at the centre such as scuba diving, archery and high ropes.

Ben said: “I’m incredibly proud to receive my award. I can’t believe I’m one of the first people to receive the new ‘Never Give Up’ Scout Scarf and Badge, it feels amazing. Everyone who won an award had done such brilliant things.”
Bear Grylls said: “I’m so proud of these remarkable young people – they have shown true grit, determination and a true never give up spirit. To me they’re all such deserving Unsung Heroes, who continue to use their skills, kindness and courage to help others. They’re an inspiration to me and everyone around them.”
