FIRE crews were called out to tackle bales of hay on fire on farmland at Burtonwood and a deliberate fire in the open at Penketh.

At 14:29 crews from Penketh and Birchwood were called to Burtonwood Road, where some 15 bales of hay were well alight in a field. Firefighters tackled the blaze using a hose reel jet.
Farm machinery has been used to drag the bales with the crews damping them down.

Earlier at 13:28 one fire engine from Penketh was called to a fire in the open in Hall Nook, which is believed to have been started deliberately.
A fire crew extinguished the fire and informed the police of the incident.
