Third win in a week for Rylands as Marine get tangled in David’s Webb

WARRINGTON Rylands rounded off a successful Bank Holiday weekend with a third victory in a week as they beat Marine 1-0 at Gorsey Lane.

A crowd of 786 witnessed a feisty encounter between two teams promoted from the NPL West during the summer looking to establish themselves in the Premier Division.
A physical Marine side enjoyed the better of the opening exchanges without looking like scoring before the home side played their way into the game and in their first attack an Andy Scarisbrick shot beat the keeper but was scrambled off the line.
Jordan Mustoe fired a free kick through a packed penalty area after Kane Drummond’s run had been blocked by Marine goalkeeper Bayleigh Passant while a last ditch tackle by Alex Doyle took the sting out of a Scarisbrick shot allowing Passant to make an easy save.
Although Rylands were on top they had to be careful not to be caught on the break as Djvan Pedro turned Josh Langley on the half way line and hared away towards the Rylands goal. Recovering well Langley caught the Marine man and took the ball off him with a good tackle.

Marine were starting to pose a few problems for the Rylands defence and on the half hour mark a Mark Howarth lofted a  free kick into the Blues area where Charley Doyle powered a header towards goal for Rylands goalkeeper Will Appleyard to tip the ball over the bar.
The game’s decisive moment arrived in the 35th minute when David Webb scored the game’s only goal.  A corner routine from the training ground caught the Marine defence off guard. Finding space in the box Webb arched his run to get in front of any defenders to be picked out by Dean Furman’s inch perfect delivery, shooting first time Webb swept the ball over Passant into the far side of the net.
A minute after his match winning strike Webb almost made it 2-0 but his free kick, awarded after Scarisbrick’s mazy run had been ended by a foul, ended up curling just the wrong side of the post.

As in the first half Marine had the better of the opening exchanges after the break.  Hayden Campbell got in behind the Rylands defence and whipped a dangerous cross across the face of goal.
Rylands soon regained control having a penalty shout turned down when a defender blocked a Scarisbrick cross with an arm, Passant tipped a long range Ryan Brooke shot around the post and Jak McCourt fired wide from distance.
As the game went on Marine became more and more desperate in their search for an equaliser launching balls into the Rylands box where they attacks were thwarted by a resolute Rylands defence backed up by a commanding display from goalkeeper Appleyard as they kept their 3rd clean sheet in as many games.
