Key route linking Lymm with M6 set to remain closed until at least November

A key route linking Lymm with the M6 is set to remain closed until at least November while work continues to install cables for extra electric vehicle charging points at Poplar Services.

It follows frustrations back in June, when Cherry Lane was closed at short notice with little warning for local residents.

During this time the section from The Avenue to the Services will be residents access only, as will the sections being worked upon – so Cherry Lane will remain closed from the services.

Once work is completed on Cherry Lane, work will continue round the corner along the A56 to Barsbank Road, which will be worked under traffic light control. This work will continue until January, and will include part of Barsbank. At this point, Cherry Lane will be open (IE from November.)

Residents will always have access, with access to Cherry Tree School and any local businesses, but there will be a “traffic management system” in place with 7am-7pm working Monday to Friday.
The stretch of road has already remained closed since June.
Local Cllr Graham Gowland commented: “It’s great that there will be improved charging facilities on the motorway, but the impact on local residents has been huge – we’ve seen closure of a main local road for months, with local businesses impacted. I hope the remaining works will take place without any issues. Scottish Power have been working hard to keep residents updated, and we’ll of course continue to keep residents updated.”

Meanwhile Warrington Borough Council has given Notice it intends to make an Order under Section 14 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. The effect of which will be as follows: –
Temporary Prohibition of Driving: Cherry Lane from its junction with Booths Lane to its junction with Booths Hill Road.
Temporary Suspension of The Borough of Warrington (Various Roads) (Consolidation of One-Way Traffic) Order 1976 in so far as it relates to the Second Schedule as follows: Cherry Lane, Lymm (B5158) from Booths Hill Road (A56) to Elm Tree Road.

The Order will be effective from 5th September 2022 for 7 weeks, as and when signed on site. Access will be under the control of the relevant Contractor for the duration of the works. The alternative routes will be: Cherry Lane (east bound traffic) via Booths Hill Road, Church Road, Higher Lane, High Legh Road, Cliff Lane and vice versa; Cherry Lane (west bound traffic) via Booths Hill Road, Camsley Lane, Stockport Road, Knutsford Road, Cliff Lane and vice versa. The restrictions are required to allow Scottish Power to install a new 33kv circuit as part of the Green Recovery Project.

SP Energy Networks have been awarded £27.8m of funding to support the transition to Net Zero and deliver a green economic recovery from Covid-19 in England and Wales.
They have worked with Ofgem, the Energy Networks Association (ENA) and stakeholders in local communities to identify shovel-ready projects that can be delivered with the right investment in their distribution network.
In the SP Manweb electricity distribution licence area which covers North West England and North Wales, they are taking forward 23 projects (including Lymm) that will reinforce and upgrade the electricity network to allow the connection of low carbon technologies (LCTs) such as electric vehicles (EVs) and electric heat pumps.
