UPDATED: TRAVELLERS have today vacated playing fields on Longshaw Street following a police notice ordering them to leave the site as the borough council says it continues to work to find a suitable transit site.

A total of 16 caravans arrived on Longshaw Street playing fields at Dallam and Bewsey on Sunday afternoon, just 24 hours after an encampment of three caravans had vacated the site.
Police are now reviewing the encampment due to a welfare issue.

A Warrington Borough Council spokesperson said: “The encampment at Longshaw Street were served notice to leave yesterday.
“We are continuing to work with our partners to identify a suitable traveller transit site in the borough. The need for this is fully established in the submitted proposed local plan that is subject to examination in public in September.”

Earlier in the week Bank Quay Bulls had made a plea to Warrington Borough Council to move the travellers off the land, so a memorial game for a former player can take place next month and for local youngsters to be able to use the rugby pitches.

It was one of at least three encampments currently in the Warrington area.
The others are Great Sankey Parish field, Great Sankey which arrived on July 16 and involves a group of seven caravans. Bailiffs have now been instructed. Meanwhile, an encampment at Peel Hall Park, Fearnhead, will involve a Court hearing on Thursday 28 July; summons to be served to the group on 27 July. Both groups had previously been allowed to remain due to health concerns.
