Former court building to get a new use

A FORMER court building in Museum Street, Warrington – latterly used as the town’s registry office – is to get a new use.

Warrington Borough Council planning chiefs have approved a change of use of the building to become the coroner’s court.

Currently unoccupied, the red-brick building is locally listed and forms part of a group of buildings in the cultural heart of the town centre and is recognised for its importance in terms of its local heritage and the historic value of the site on which it is located.
The three-storey building dates from 1926.

The change of use will enable the Cheshire coroner’s service to relocate from its present cramped accommodation at the Town Hall.
There will be room for two, larger court rooms in the building and for the police coroner’s support team.
The proposals also involve a new fire escape at the rear of the building, a platform lift to the first floor and new fencing for the car park.
