Police criticise “rubberneckers” after unlucky driver collides with barrier

POLICE have criticised “rubberneckers” who took their eyes off the road to ridicule an “unlucky driver” who collided with a road barrier in Warrington yesterday.

After witnessing motorists stopping in live lanes near a busy motorway junction to take photographs and shout out phrases like “You can’t park there mate” police took to social media to criticise “rubberneckers” who put others at risk by taking their eyes off the road.

Warrington Police posted on social media:

You can’t park there mate…
These are the wise words of many other motorists who decided to rubber neck at this RTC.
Now I’m fairly sure that the unlucky driver of this vehicle is fully aware of where he can park. Accidents happen.
But what doesn’t help is people taking their eyes off the road to rubber neck and in this case have a quick sly dig at the driver of this car. These drivers were also very close to causing another accident through sheer madness.
Thankfully no injuries on this occasion.

After getting some criticism for their post from members of the public, police responded:

“Some people will disagree with the sentiment of this post and some will agree.
“To give you an idea of what we dealt with. People were stopping in live lanes on a busy junction to get pictures and shout out. Momentary lapses of concentration by a driver cause secondary incidents and put the lives of those who are at the scene at risk.
“This isn’t about trashing people’s sense of humour… there is a serious point in all of this, accident scenes are not a source of entertainment. Imagine if you were a driver of a vehicle that ploughed into the accident scene killing members of the public or emergency services? Losing your license? Potential custodial sentence? This can all be avoided by concentrating on driving safely. All we want is for drivers to enjoy and use Cheshire’s roads safely. Nothing more and nothing less.”

* Rubbernecker – a person who looks at something in a stupid way, especially a driver who drives more slowly to look at an accident.
