The biggest sporting events in August

1

August is always a cracking month in the sporting world. Whether it’s the beginning of the domestic football season, top-class boxing matches, or the US Open tennis Grand Slam, there is always something to look forward to when August rolls around.

Here, we’ve put together a quick guide to some of the biggest sporting events that are set to grace our television screens this August.

The Premier League

What better place to start than with the return of Premier League football? This season will be getting underway a little earlier than usual due to the 2022 World Cup taking place in the middle of the campaign.

The action kicks off on August 5th, with the highlights of the opening weekend including Arsenal’s trip to Crystal Palace, newly promoted Nottingham Forest’s match against Newcastle United, Everton hosting Chelsea, and Manchester City taking on West Ham United at the London Stadium

The Hundred

There’s good news for cricket fans as the second season of The Hundred gets underway at the beginning of August. The fast-paced, action-packed variant of the sport sees a distinctly more youthful version of the sport grace our shores, but given the success of The Hundred last year, the 2022 edition is guaranteed to bring plenty of excitement.

The tournament sees eight men’s and eight women’s teams battle it out to reach the knockout stages, where an overall winner will be crowned.

Irish Greyhound Derby

Turning to greyhound racing, the Irish Greyhound Derby kicks off in August, and runs all the way through to the final on September 24th. Those who bet on greyhound racing will be eagerly analysing the market, with Ballinabola Ed the current antepost favourite.

Held at the iconic Shelbourne Park Stadium in Dublin, the Irish Greyhound Derby is one of the standout races on the British and Irish calendar. Better study the greyhound tips today before the action gets underway!

Usyk vs. Joshua II

Boxing fans have a mouth-watering fight to look forward to in August, with the rematch between Anthony Joshua and Oleksandr Usyk taking place on August 20th in Saudi Arabia. With Usyk having got the better of Joshua back in September 2021, this is Joshua’s last real chance to restore his reputation as one of the elite fighters in the heavyweight division.

The prospect of a match-up between Joshua and Tyson Fury could hinge on the Watford native getting the better of Usyk, so there will plenty on the line come fight night.

US Open

At the end of the month, the last Grand Slam tennis tournament of the year gets underway, as the best players in the world head to Flushing Meadows in New York for the US Open. The biggest story this year is the likely absence of Novak Djokovic, with the Serbian’s vaccination status meaning that he cannot enter the US to take part.

The defending champion is Daniil Medvedev, who missed out on Wimbledon this month due to the fact that Russian players were banned from the event, so he’ll be eager to produce his best at Flushing Meadows. It’s set to be a cracking tournament.
