Australian forward leaves Wolves after eight games

WARRINGTON Wolves have confirmed the departure of forward Billy Magoulias.

Magoulias, 25, only arrived from NRL club Cronulla Sharks in the off-season, but leaves after making just eight appearances.

A club statement said: “Warrington Wolves can confirm that Billy Magoulias has been released from the remainder of his contract with immediate effect to return home to Australia on compassionate grounds.

“We thank Billy for his efforts during his time at the club and wish him all the best for the future.”

The Greece international suffered an ankle injury in pre-season training which delayed his debut until the Challenge Cup defeat to Wakefield in March.

He tasted victory just twice in a Wolves shirt, in the back-to-back victories over Salford and Huddersfield in April.

Warrington have lost 11 of their last 13 outings, but are without a game this weekend due to the England international against Combined Nations All Stars, which is being played at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

Despite their club form, five Wolves players have been called up by England coach Shaun Wane.

They are marquee man George Williams, possible debutant Matty Ashton, Wigan-bound Mike Cooper, Stefan Ratchford and Joe Philbin.

Wolves pair Daryl Clark and Peter Mata’utia have been named in the All Stars squad, which will be coached by rugby league legend Ellery Hanley.
