WARRINGTON Wolves’ homegrown Prop Mike Cooper will leave the club at the end of the current season to join arch-rivals Wigan Warriors.

His departure follows on from former club captain Chris Hill, who departed at the end of last season, to carve out a new career at Huddersfield giants, where he is a stand-out performer, featuring in the Challenge Cup Final last month.

Warrington-born Cooper is a product of the Academy system and has played 269 games for the club during two spells spanning 14 seasons. He joins Wigan on a one-year deal with a second-year option.

The 33-year-old England international made his primrose and blue debut back in 2006 against London Skolars in the Challenge Cup. In 2014, Cooper enjoyed a spell in the NRL representing St George-Illawarra Dragons for three years before returning to club in 2017.

Cooper has lifted the Challenge Cup four times during his time at Warrington as well as the League Leaders’ Shield in 2011. He has also played in three Grand Finals.

Commenting on his departure Cooper said: “I really have lived my dream since making my debut all those years ago. I have met some incredible people and friends for life and I thank everyone who’s been a part of my time at the club since I first joined as an 11-year-old.

“The club is in my family, it’s in my blood and hopefully I have earned every supporter and staff member’s respect during my time here – that’s all I ever wanted.

“The main thank you I would like to say is to our supporters who have stuck with us and me throughout and for that I’m forever grateful. Hopefully, I’ve done you all proud.”

Warrington Wolves CEO Karl Fitzpatrick said: “Mike has been an unbelievable servant for this club. This was recognised by him being awarded a Testimonial in 2020.

“He’s a player who wears his heart on his sleeve, and I know how much it has meant to him to represent his hometown club for so many years.

“I know he’s determined to ensure we finish the season strongly and I wish him well for the next stage of his career.”

Cooper will be re-united with former teammate and assistant coach Lee Briers at Wigan.
