Helping Hands Culcheth celebrates second anniversary

HOT on the heels of the Orford branch, Culcheth Helping Hands community group is celebrating two years of service to vulnerable residents in the WA3 postcode.

Founded in April 2020 at the height of the Covid-19 lockdown under the leadership of Wendy Maisey OBE the group has gone from strength to strength.

Wendy said: “It has been an amazing journey and I’m proud of the fantastic volunteers who now run the branch on a daily basis. In April 2020 we opened in Culcheth to serve WA3 and take pressure from the Orford hub. Referrals came mostly from people within the community who were concerned about a neighbour, friend or member of their own family.

“We’ve always made it clear that we’re not a foodbank and our service relies upon the generosity of the community and businesses donating items to us. We provide a stopgap for the most vulnerable people, and our service is not means-tested.

“The vision of Carol Kilgannon and Stephen Murphy who founded the Orford branch has been inspiration, they’re incredible community-minded individuals”.

Carol Kilgannon added: “When I look back to how much we’ve diversified our service and offerings over the past two years to ensure we continue to help the Orford community it makes us all so proud. Our volunteers are at the heart of what we do.”

“We’ve had recognition in the form of many awards and formed relationships with other great organisations who have helped us along the way. The Rotary Club, Warrington Lions and the Police and Crime Commissioner have been so supportive of our aims and ethos.”
