MAYOR of Warrington Cllr Maureen Creaghan laid a wreath at Soldiers’ Corner in Warrington Cemetery today (Sunday) to commemorate the anniversary of Anzac Day, tomorrow, Monday, April 25.
Anzac Day commemorates the anniversary of Australian and New Zealand forces landing at Gallipoli during World War One, in 1915, and the thousands who gave their lives.
As first citizen of the borough, the Mayor marked the anniversary by laying a wreath at Soldiers’ Corner at Warrington Cemetery, where she was joined by representatives from Australia’s Defence Forces, Warrington veterans, members of the town’s cadet forces, Warrington South MP Andy Carter and about 100 residents.
Soldiers from all over the Commonwealth are buried at Soldiers’ Corner, as Winwick Hospital was taken over as a military hospital during the First World War.

The wreath laying pays tribute to Australian and New Zealand forces landing at Gallipoli during the First World War in 1915. A number of Australian and New Zealand servicemen are buried in Warrington Cemetery.
Canon June Stephenson from St Elphin’s Church led the act of Remembrance while Warrington Brass band performed the music to accompany a very moving service.

wow as an ex Warringtonina from the era of the ” up the WIre” now living in Australia, it is great to see the ANZACs being recognised in my home town, and that was an interesting bit of history too. Well done and thank you.
One point though ANZAC should be written in all uppercase, as in Au, NZ, UK, USA MP etc
