Warrington Rylands v Market Drayton Town – Big game preview

By Garry Clarke

Warrington Rylands are looking to extend their winning run to six games on Saturday when welcome Market Drayton Town for a NPL West fixture, kick off 3pm.

The game brings together the top and bottom of the table, and although the visitors had their relegation from the NPL confirmed on Monday it will not be an easy game for Rylands as Market Drayton are not as bad as their record would suggest.

The season started so well for MDT as they won their opening game of the season beating Prescot Cables 1-0 at home. Unfortunately that was their only win of the season, and with just four games drawn, they have been at the foot of the table since November and losing 4-1 at home to Kidsgrove Athletic confirmed their relegation after 13 seasons in the NPL.

Winning 2-1 at City of Liverpool last Saturday Rylands are currently the form team of the NPL West with six wins on the bounce, while Market Drayton are 19th in the form table, having drawn against Clitheroe before embarking on a run of five defeats, one place above Kendal Town who have lost their last eight games.

Going into Saturday’s game Rylands with 71 points hold a three point lead at the top of the table, although second placed Marine have two games in hand. Workington and Leek Town are a further two points behind in 3rd and 4th, also with games in hand, Runcorn Linnets make up the top five on 57 points.

The two team’s respective league records going into Saturday’s game are:
P          W         D          L          GF        GA       GD       PTS      POS
Rylands                        32        22        5          5          81        35        46        71        1
Market Drayton          31        1          4          26        14        88        -74       7          20

Possessing the home league record Rylands record at Gorsey Lane this season is:
P          W         D          L
16        13        1          2

While Market Drayton posses the worst away record in the division:
P          W         D          L
15        0          1          14

Earlier in the season Warrington Rylands travelled to the Greenfields Sports Ground on 6th September and returned home with all three points despite going a goal behind in the first minute. After Connor Russo had given the home side the lead Rick Smith equalized just before the half time break. Owen Robinson fired Rylands in front just after the restart and George Hassell completed the scoring in the 53rd minute as Rylands won 3-1. The game watched by 143 spectators.

As their first season in the Northern Premier League reaches its conclusion Warrington Rylands have five games to play after Saturday:

Saturday 26th March away v Ramsbottom United
Saturday 2nd April home v Runcorn Linnets
Saturday 9th April away v Workington
Monday 18th April away v 1874 Northwich
Saturday 23rd April home v Bootle

All games to kick off at 3pm.
