Campaigners prepare to bid for historic Raven Inn after property put up for auction

CAMPAIGNERS battling to save the historic Raven Inn at Glazebury are stepping up their bid to purchase the building which has now been listed for auction.

The Raven Inn has recently been listed for sale, by auction with a guide price of between £150,000 to £200,000.

Campaigners understand the Raven Inn, which was privately owned previously, is now in the hands of receivers.

Help save the Raven Inn spokesperson Peter Sturman said: “It is terribly sad that the owners were not able to engage with the community. Offers were made in 2019, 2020 and reaffirmed just a few months ago. Those offers would have realised a profit on what was originally paid for the Raven.

“We have consistently said we would have loved them to engage with us.

“We are aware of deterioration, removal of copper and lead and damage to the Raven Inn. The building has considerably dropped in value.

“We note the auction agent’s description talks of the possibility of change of use to residential. We are well aware that, if change of use was granted, it could then pave the way for demolition.

“Let us be absolutely clear. We have campaigned to Save the Raven for over three years.

“We have previously made offers, to purchase, intending that the Raven continues as a pub.

“We have successfully opposed two formal planning applications. We would vehemently oppose any future application for change of use. Our experience has taught us that could be the thin end of the wedge.

“Our local community has demonstrated, time and time again, the sheer strength of feeling, unity and determination to save the Raven. We will never let our guard down.

“We have secured funding that will enable a bid for the Raven, when it comes to auction. We hope, very much, that the Raven will soon be saved,” added Peter.

Travellers still currently occupy the site but it is understood a court order has been issued instructing them to leave by March 23.
