Latchford discover life can be tough at the top

LATCHFORD Albion found out how tough life in the premier division can be when they fell to defeat against reigning champions Orrell St James in an encounter that, despite the 6-34 scoreline, was a competitive game.
The game was played in difficult conditions with a swirling wind, and the hosts utilised this to take an early advantage.
Matty Rudd’s towering bomb caused havoc in the Orrell defence, and Gareth Fairhurst was on hand to benefit and cross in the corner, Rudd adding an excellent touchline conversion.
Shortly after, the visitors employed the same tactic, with the same result, when a kick was not dealt with allowing them to level the scores. On 20 minutes Orrell took the lead with a second converted try.
Albion had plenty of possession and territory, applying some good pressure to the visitors’ line but, despite their best efforts, they could not find a way through a well organised efence
On 35 minutes another kick was not dealt with by the hosts, allowing Orrell to further extend their lead and at half time the visitors held a 6-16 lead.
As with the first half Albion matched their opponents with forwards Danny Brown, Matthew Nash and Jack Foulkes topping the hit up statistics during the game.
Unfortunately any thought of a comeback was extinguished on the hour mark, when an unconverted try by Orrell St.James extended their lead further.
The scoreline got away from Latchford towards the end of the game. With nothing to lose Albion were perhaps guilty of possibly trying too hard, and the hosts benefitted, registering an intercept try, before a further two scores gave the scoreline a tough reflection of the game.
Despite the defeat, hooker Jack Phillips once again impressed, registering 33 tackles in a solid display.
This Saturday Latchford have another home fixture when they entertain Thatto Heath Crusaders at the ASICS Victoria Park Arena, Kick off 2.30pm
