A former Warrington youth Mayor is leading Labour’s condemnation of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in the south of the borough.

Labour Party members in South Warrington have expressed their anger and disgust at Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine and have also sent their support to the Ukrainian people and called for tougher sanctions to be imposed on Vladimir Putin and his “cronies”.

Meeting at Thelwall Parish Hall, Warrington South Constituency Labour Party approved a motion condemning the invasion and urging the Government to do more to help the refugees who have fled Ukraine in their tens of thousands to escape the fighting.

The motion was proposed by Max Czekalski, who lives in Walton and served as Warrington’s first Youth Mayor from August 2020 to February 2021.

It read: “Warrington South CLP condemns Vladimir Putin’s despicable and illegal invasion of Ukraine.

“Whilst continuing to support the Leader of the Opposition in his calls for tougher sanctions against individuals and businesses which benefit from Putin’s rule, we also extend our sympathies and support to the Ukrainian community in Warrington and globally.

“We urge the Opposition to strongly press for clear protocols enabling Ukrainian refugees to be accepted and settled in the UK.”

Born in Warsaw before moving to Warrington when he was 14, Max attended Great Sankey High School and Barrow Hall College and starts a degree course in international relations and politics at Liverpool John Moores University in September.

He said: “I am delighted that the CLP accepted my motion and equally delighted that Poland, the country where I was born, has decided to accept so many Ukrainian refugees at this difficult time. However, I am worried about my Ukrainian friends that I have not been able to contact.”

Former MP Faisal Rashid, who chairs Warrington South CLP, added: “We realise that Vladimir Putin will not be worried by a motion from the Labour Party in Warrington but we wanted to register our outrage at his illegal actions.

“Ukraine is a free, democratic country and the people of Ukraine have done nothing wrong. We are calling on the international community to do everything in its power including sporting and business sanctions to show President Putin that he cannot get away with this reckless and illegal invasion of another European country.”
