WORK is underway on a path improvement project at Warrington’s Sankey Valley Park.
The 10-week project involves path widening and full resurfacing of a 500m section between the rail viaduct (Seven Arches) and the pumping station (Bewsey Lodge).
Sankey Valley Park has extremely popular routes for walkers and cyclists, regularly exceeding 2,000 people per day near the pumping station, at peak times. However, the current path in this area is in poor condition and is too narrow to accommodate the high number of users.
The investment will revitalise the path and bring huge benefits to people walking, cycling, using mobility scooters and wheelchairs.
Warrington Borough Council’s cabinet member for transportation, highways and public realm, Cllr Hans Mundry, said: “This path has an incredible amount of potential to enable more active travel trips, as in many cases it offers a much more direct and shorter journey than the equivalent vehicle route. However, it has been in need of an upgrade for some time.
“I’m delighted that work is now under way on these important improvements. They will transform this route, enabling people to travel sustainably, healthily and safely, with plenty of room for everyone.
“This project is the latest of a number of recent schemes we’re delivering as part of our Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP) and funded through our Local Transport Plan Active Travel budget. It follows recent path upgrades on the Trans Pennine Trail, Longbarn Park and Victoria Park.”
The works have been phased over a 10-week period, and at various stages of the works, it will be necessary to close sections of the path. When this is the case, advance notification will be provided, and there will be a signed alternative route, using other paths within the park. works.
