Green Belt caravan site plan is thrown out

AN application for permission to develop a caravan site on a Green Belt site has been thrown out by Warrington planning chiefs.

The scheme involved a former colliery site off Broad Lane, Burtonwood.
Planning chiefs have ruled that the site is not appropriate for a residential caravan site for 10 caravans and that the applicant has failed to show the development would be suitable in the Green Belt.
The scheme involves land which is now largely improved grassland enclosed in a paddock but which contains three disused mine shafts and a wooden framed stables building with a corrugated metal roof. The proposals are for the laying out of caravan pitches and associated works including hardstanding and drainage.
Although in the Green Belt, the site is classed as formerly developed land because of the previous mining use
An ecology report indicated that there were no nationally or locally rare plant species on the site, nor protected species. But existing trees and hedgerows provide suitable nesting sites for birds.
