Driver suffers life-threatening injuries as M6 closed near Lymm following serious collision

UPDATED: Traffic disruption continues in the Warrington area following a serious collision on the M6 near Lymm during the early hours of this morning involving several vehicles, leaving one driver with life-threatening injuries.

The closure for accident investigation and resurfacing works, following a large spillage of diesel and repairs to the central reservation, is having a knock-on effect on roads off the network.
The southbound section will now not open until tomorrow (Saturday) morning while resurfacing works take place.
During Friday, The A49 out of Warrington and the A556 NB from Northwich was very congested and motorists were advised to find alternatives routes.
The collision involved a lorry, a white panel van and a silver Mercedes car on the southbound stretch of the motorway shortly after 4:15am.
Emergency services including police and paramedics attended at the scene between junction 19 for Knutsford and 20 for Lymm.
The driver of the Mercedes, a man in his 50s, was taken to hospital.
His injuries are believed to be serious and life-threatening Cheshire Police said.
North West Ambulance said three people had been taken to hospital.
A spokesperson said:”Three ambulances, an advanced paramedic and a response vehicle, went the to scene of a multi-vehicle collision.
“Three patients were taken to hospital, with one of those suffering major-trauma related injuries.”
